Is ₹1 Lakh a Month Enough to Live in Bengaluru? Viral Video Sparks Debate

A viral Bengaluru Instagram video claiming ₹1 lakh a month is the minimum income needed to live in the city has sparked debate over rent, property prices and lifestyle costs.

Is ₹1 Lakh a Month Enough to Live in Bengaluru? Viral Video Sparks Debate

Bengaluru: A viral Instagram video has triggered a fresh debate over the rising cost of living in Bengaluru after a woman claimed that people earning less than ₹1 lakh a month should reconsider moving to the city.

The woman, identified as Atreyee, spoke about Bengaluru's housing costs, property prices, commuting expenses and lifestyle spending. Her comments quickly attracted attention online, with viewers divided over whether ₹1 lakh a month is really the minimum income required to live in the city.

What Did the Viral Video Claim?

In the video, Atreyee argued that Bengaluru has become increasingly expensive for middle-class residents.

According to her claims, renting a basic 2BHK apartment in a gated community can cost around ₹40,000–₹45,000 a month, while a standalone house outside a gated community could still cost approximately ₹30,000.

She also claimed that buying a home in Bengaluru can require around ₹2 crore, while properties in more sought-after neighbourhoods can reach ₹3–4 crore.

Based on these costs, she suggested that ₹1 lakh per month should be viewed as a minimum income threshold, while an income of ₹3–4 lakh a month could be needed for a more comfortable lifestyle.

Her conclusion that “Bengaluru is definitely not for middle-class people” became one of the most debated parts of the video.

Social Media Users Divided

The video has received mixed reactions online.

Some viewers agreed with her assessment, particularly those living close to major technology and business hubs. They pointed to rising rents, transportation expenses, eating-out costs and property prices as reasons why managing a household in Bengaluru can be financially challenging.

Others disagreed with the idea that ₹1 lakh is a universal minimum salary for living in the city.

They argued that Bengaluru has a wide range of neighbourhoods and housing options. Sharing accommodation, living farther from major business districts, cooking at home and controlling discretionary spending can significantly reduce monthly expenses.

Is ₹1 Lakh Really the Minimum?

There is no single income figure that can objectively determine whether someone can afford to live in Bengaluru.

A person's required income depends on several factors, including whether they live alone or with a family, their rent, location, transportation needs, education expenses, lifestyle and financial commitments.

For example, a young professional sharing a rented apartment may have a very different monthly budget from a family renting a private 2BHK in a premium neighbourhood.

Similarly, someone working from home may spend considerably less on transportation than a daily commuter travelling across the city.

Housing Remains a Major Expense

Housing is one of the biggest factors influencing Bengaluru's cost of living.

Rents can vary considerably depending on locality, property size, amenities and proximity to employment centres. Areas close to major IT corridors and business districts generally command higher rents, while properties farther away can offer comparatively lower prices.

The city's property market also covers a wide spectrum, from smaller apartments and older properties to luxury homes and premium gated communities.

Bengaluru's Cost-of-Living Debate Continues

The viral video has once again highlighted a larger question about affordability in India's technology capital.

Bengaluru continues to attract professionals, entrepreneurs, students and businesses from across the country because of its employment opportunities and growing economy. At the same time, rapid population growth and strong housing demand have contributed to concerns about affordability.

Ultimately, whether ₹1 lakh a month is enough depends heavily on an individual's circumstances.

For some residents, it may provide a comfortable lifestyle. For others, particularly families with high housing, education, transportation and other expenses, a significantly higher income may be required.

The viral discussion therefore reflects one person's experience and financial expectations rather than a universal benchmark for everyone living in Bengaluru.
