Bengaluru Apartments, Houses and Industries Face Action Over Water Pollution
Bengaluru authorities may take action against apartments, houses and industries polluting water bodies, with officials asked to identify non-compliant units and strengthen sewage treatment measures.
Bengaluru: Apartments, residential properties and industrial units found contributing to pollution of the city’s water bodies could face action as authorities intensify efforts to prevent untreated sewage and waste from entering major water systems.
Officials have reportedly been given one week to identify and report non-compliant units, while the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) and the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) have been asked to take measures within a month to strengthen sewage treatment and curb waste discharge.
Focus on Cauvery and Arkavathy Water Systems
The move comes amid growing concerns over pollution affecting Bengaluru’s water resources, including the Cauvery and Arkavathy river systems.
Untreated sewage, wastewater and other forms of urban waste can severely affect the quality of water bodies. Authorities are therefore focusing on preventing sewage and pollutants from entering natural drains, lakes and connected waterways.
The latest action is expected to put greater responsibility on residential communities, property owners and industries to ensure that wastewater is properly treated and disposed of according to applicable regulations.
Apartments Under the Scanner
Large apartment complexes generate significant quantities of wastewater every day. Where required, such communities are expected to operate and maintain Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) and ensure that treated wastewater meets prescribed standards.
Authorities are expected to identify apartment complexes that do not have adequate sewage-treatment arrangements or are failing to operate existing facilities properly.
Non-compliant properties could face enforcement action under applicable environmental and water-pollution regulations.
Industries Also Face Scrutiny
Industrial establishments are another major focus of pollution-control efforts.
Industries generating wastewater must follow applicable pollution-control requirements and ensure that effluents are appropriately treated before discharge. Inspections could help authorities identify units that are releasing untreated or inadequately treated wastewater into drains and water bodies.
KSPCB is expected to play a key role in monitoring industrial compliance and taking action where violations are found.
One-Month Deadline for Key Measures
The reported directions give authorities a relatively short timeframe to address the issue.
Officials have been asked to identify non-compliant establishments within a week, while BWSSB and KSPCB have been given one month to implement measures aimed at improving sewage treatment and preventing waste from reaching water bodies.
The timelines are intended to push agencies towards faster identification of pollution sources and corrective action.
Importance of Sewage Treatment Plants
STPs are an important part of managing wastewater in a rapidly growing city such as Bengaluru.
Properly designed and maintained treatment systems can reduce the amount of pollutants released into the environment. However, simply having an STP may not be sufficient if it is poorly maintained or not operated according to required standards.
Regular monitoring, maintenance and compliance checks are therefore essential.
Bengaluru’s Growing Water Challenge
Bengaluru's rapid urbanisation has placed increasing pressure on its water infrastructure. The expansion of residential layouts, apartment communities and commercial and industrial activity has increased wastewater generation.
At the same time, the city's interconnected network of lakes, drains and waterways means pollution in one location can affect downstream water bodies.
Preventing untreated wastewater from entering these systems is consequently an important part of protecting Bengaluru's water resources.
Greater Accountability for Polluters
The latest measures could increase accountability among property owners, apartment associations and industries.
Authorities may need to combine inspections, monitoring and enforcement with awareness and technical support to ensure that establishments understand and meet wastewater-treatment requirements.
For apartment residents and businesses, compliance is not only a regulatory requirement but also an important environmental responsibility.
